Mandrake 10.01 download
 

Hello I downloaded Mandrake 10.01 from mirror site HEAnet FTP and burnt the ISO files onto 3 CD's. These are cd1.i586.iso

I assumed the first CD would be bootable ready to install. My machine BIOS is already set to boot in CD drive. But it does not boot into Linux cd.

What else am am i supposed to do to make it boot into the cd.???

Make sure your proc. is a i586 or higher, thats pentium 3+ i think, also could be that your ISO was bad or the CD is damaged or you cd-drive is broken.
are you sure you set it to boot from cd

Did you do a md5sum check on each ISO image before you burnt them? If not, you may have corrupted images.

How did you burn them?

Yes, the first CD is bootable. Does your CD light turn on during the boot process?

Hi guys, I use Nero to burn CD's and I assume all the file checksum are done automatically after the burn process. My cd drive is definitely OK so is the burner. The cd drive is also set to boot in the bios.

I was surprised to read that you seem to be saying that the processesor should be P III or higher.?????

I am installing this on a Pentium MMX 200 Mhz. With 95 mb ram and 80 gig hard drive.

Before you say this is the problem, keep in mind that I successfully installed Red Hat 9 about a year ago, using cd which came with a book.

Maybe you could explain what type of file checker md5sum is and how can I carry it out.

This is how you check the downloaded ISO image for md5sum. If you did not check it, you probably have bad downloads.

If you still have the ISO's your disk, check them. You can find the correct md5sums from the server you downloaded the ISO's form. If you do not have a match, on any image, download and burn again.

Nero will not do a md5sum check. After all, it is a windbloze program.

Mandriva 10.1 will run on any pentium based machine. You may find the response on one of the graphical desktops a little slow, but it will run. I have a P1 233 Mhz machine, 96 meg of ram, and it was my first machine to run linux on. I used KDE, not blistering performance, but it runs. Try out one of the light weight desktops, they improve overall performance.

You did't answer if you see any CD disk activity when trying to boot from the install CD. Please let us know.

The burning tut is for Roxio. I have bured ISO's with Nero, so I know it will work. Somewhere in the menus there is a ISO image button to select. Make sure this is how you did it, or the CD won't boot.

Hi thanks for the last instructions. I just ran the md5 and got the following message:

md5sum: WARNING: 1 of 1 listed file could not be read

On the download I went to my local mirror site and the options were for Ireland http.HEAnet.ftp

Obviously I don't want to waste cd ( cd's to burn!!? ). So can anyone recomend a reliable source to download from?

Well, which specific mirror site should i use. My original download was from this page Ireland http: HEAnet.ftp. It's lower down this page.

Or do you mean not downloading from a mirror at all and use the links at top of the page??? Where it says,

The link at the top of the page that shows the check-sum is from HEAnet. As I understand it, that one you have not had success with. Scrole down, pick one with the higher % on it. There are 3 links on the right, one for each ISO. Click there to download. That sould do it.

Well, I actually done that already. I think it was i586.iso and that was rated the highest at 95%...?

OK I will try again, but when I tried to execute the iso files from command prompt in dos it was felt like it was trying to fire up something.

Should I try to get to command prompt using windowz setup disk, then insert mandrake disk 1 and execute the iso that way???

Did you download the md5sum.exe file for Windows? It is a windows executable md5sum checking program. You run it against the ISO downloaded file. Example from a command prompt in windows:

md5sum.exe MDKisofilename ( press enter) You also need to use the correct file name of the ISO. It will execute, and take few seconds to minutes to generate teh md5sum for the file you have. It will generate a string of characters. When they match exactly the posted string on the download site, it is a good download. Then you can burn it. Remember to burn it as an ISO image.

Once you have burnt the ISO image disk, it will be bootable. Set up your BIOS to boot from CD, stick the CD in the drive. It should give you a menu to install from.
