I had been having such issues with versions 8 and 9, but once I tried booting in compatibility mode, I had more success. Version 8 was particularly troublesome. I used Unetbootin to put the distro on USB and am enjoying it. Booting from DVD I once thought was impossible, in fact I was thinking that drive was nearing its end-of-life (after burning a mere 2,000 disks?). It's an LG DVD/CD burner, and some days it is faultless. Others inconsistent or non-working.At six years old it is about as old as any burners I've ever had. Not much help for you, I know. Makulu 10 Test version has been good for me, but 8 and 9 have been hard to get going.

Unfortunate that some folks are having trouble with Makulu as the distro has a ton of potential but has had some problems. I tried 3 of the offerings from Makulu and none would stay running with any sense of reliability. My understanding is that the lead developer recently moved and was out of the loop for close to a month. In reading the developers forum it sounds like he is back on track but time will tell if this distro becomes what it could be. The next version will be 10 and my understanding is that we will see it in the next 2-6 weeks.
On a side note, the forum for Makulu on the projects site isn't all that good. May not be a bad idea to get one rolling on LQ.org. The developer forum is quite good. You can see it at http://makululinux.freeforums.org/index.php but need to request access for it.
