making fun of "Linux Mint Debian Edition"

I just heard of a Mint version called Debian Edition. Am I the only person who sees that to someone with enough experience to know what Mint and Debian respectively are, that just sounds ridiculous? In the sense that Mint is based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian, Mint is just Debian twice removed. And someone nevertheless wanted Mint to resemble Debian?

Yes, yes, it's actually about what software repositories are used; but if one dwells on that, it's not nearly as funny. The name makes me think of people who marry their relatives.

It's a fallback measure.
"to ensure Linux Mint can continue to deliver the same user experience if Ubuntu was ever to disappear."

P.S. I don't see any humor in it...

LMDE is not based on Ubuntu (like all the other Mints) - it is based on Debian.

Not sure why that trips you up. Or why you would find it funny, or ludicrous, or - incestuous?!

I ran LMDE briefly on my previous laptop. It had Broadcom wi-fi, so I chose Mint because of its reputation for incorporating useful firmware and it did indeed provide me with the B49 driver that I needed. I chose LMDE rather than standard Mint because I prefer Debian to Ubuntu as a base.

I wouldn't "make fun of it", but it does seem somewhat overcautious. Maybe they know something we don't?

From their website:

What is LMDE?
LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for "Linux Mint Debian Edition".

Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint can continue to deliver the same user experience if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. It allows us to assess how much we depend on Ubuntu and how much work would be involved in such an event. LMDE is also one of our development targets, as such it guarantees the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu.
With the direction Canonical seems to be going with their snap heavy packages, maybe it's a good thing that LMDE exists.

The only choice of LMDE I disagree is that it's 32bit ISO image also feature Cinnamon. So, running a computer with 1GB of RAM just doesn't work (tested on a old rig I use to test lightweight OS'es)

[cough] Okay. I'm done laughing at the name. I'm distro-hopping and going to try LMDE.
