Looking for a distro for a QA lab, possibly production

At work we run a Java app across a number of servers, all of which currently run Windows Server. We've recently put together a QA lab, with virtual machines, that also run Windows Server. For our QA lab it may make financial sense to experiment with Linux. The only thing we run on those machines is Tomcat. Certainly this experiment has potential to move into our production environment if we can find the right solution.

Our front runner, because of the production possibilities, is RHEL. It's quite cost effective and provides a nice level of support. However, for the lab, we'd rather not pay for RHEL. My thought was to run CentOS there since it's a similar environment.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

well centos is the totally obvious choice for a free but maintained rhel equivalent.
