Linux Recomendation

Hi, I'm trying to find the right Linux distro for me, and so far I've tried Ark Linux, Debian, Ubuntu, and Mepis.

My friend showed me Ubuntu and I absolutely loved it! So, I took his Ubuntu CD and it wouldn't install at all! The Same thing happened with ALL the other distros I've tried (the ones listed above).

Here are my specs:
eMachines T1840
Intel Celeron 1.8gHz processor
512MB RAM
50GB HDD (1 40GB and 1 10GB)
Voodoo 3.0 simultaneously using my onboard standard VGA adapter.
I also have a Linksys WUSB54G ver. 4, that I use to connect to the internet, so I need a distro that will detect it.

This is what I'd like for my Linux distro:

1. A nice GUI and great features (Like Ubuntu)
2. I'm not sure if Linux gets viruses, but I want a distro that gets none.

and that's pretty much it...

Video problems as far as I know. I'm still awaiting responses from their individual message boards.

on Ubuntuforums.com one guy said to install in text based alternate CD, but wouldn't my comp still not work for Ubuntu itself when it boots up?

If none of the distros will install, are you sure it's not a hardware (CD / DVD) failure? All those distros should at the very least perform a functional install (given the hardware).

As for the other questions,

1. You could always try SuSE 10.2 - plenty of eye candy and gui configuration. Overloaded with apps

2. You shouldn't have a problem with viruses, but for peace of mind, there is a Linux version of AVG

Ok, I'll post exactly what I put on the Ubuntu forum:

"All right. I use my friend's copy of the Ubuntu CD, (2 different copies in fact), The first screen loads up normally, and I choose "Start or Install Ubuntu"... I wait about 5 minutes in front of a black screen. then all of a sudden a blue screen with black text and a gray background comes up with upside down L's and weird foreign characters and I can make out a little bit of the text and it says "your graphical *indecipherable* was not loaded correctly""

I'm absolutely sure it wasn't a hardware problem, I tried 2 different CDs my friend got in the mail, I've tried Ubuntu 6.04 on the ISO, and the rest of the Distros were the same problem...video. it says on most of their websites that if you have a Video Card that will have at least a 1024x786 resolution, it should work, and mine goes up to 1280x1024...

and is that openSuSE 10.2? or the one you have to pay for?

I'm pretty sure Baldrick is talking about openSuSE, you could also try PCLinuxOS or Fedora

All right, I spose I'll try out Fedora and PCLinuxOS and SuSE 10.2 (even though I usually don't go near betas).

I'm actually quite interested in Fedora to tell the truth.

Sorry ... openSuSE it was. Like I said, plenty of bloat, but lots of great stuff too. And you can always cull some of the unwanted packages. Umm Fedora and PCLinuxOS and openSuSE 10.2 aren't betas either.

Just wondering but uhh, is PCLinuxOS based off of anything?

And is there anyway to just get the Fedora CD instead of DVD ISO? (I have no DVD Burner)

if so please give me a link

you guys' help is very appreciated!

EDIT: and are you sure it will work on my PC? I've reinstalled windows appx. 5 times now and I don't want to go through that again :'(

From the web site
Quote:
Beginning with Fedora 7, it is recommended to use Live images to install on a system with a CD-ROM only. It is also possible to use a boot.iso, a rescue.iso (which fit on a CD) or a boot.img that fits on a USB, zip or super disk, and can be used to start a network or a harddrive install.
You should then be able to add/remove packages as required.

This is the distro I use and recommend, Why because it works right out of the box. No need to configure Everything, everything just works. It also comes as a 1 CD install that is a live CD that you can install later if you wish.
