Ubuntu has a PPC build that I imagine would work on those systems, as does gentoo.

i try with ubuntu
i use ubuntu, but the memory on the imacs is very low for this distribution. You know about another one?

Have you tried yellow dog linux? It's specifically targeted at PPC systems.

i see yellow dog too
i see the yellow dog distribution, but the minimal machine needs 128 megas of ram, but i just have 32 or 64 megas. is the same whit ubuntu. You know something about mandrake 9.1 ppc?

I used to have a package-by-package installation guide for a light weight version of Ubuntu but I can't find it. If you know what packages you want, you can run a basic install and just add the packages you need, using apt-get. You could probably do the same thing with Debian Sarge. The complete distro is really too much for these old computers. With 64 megs, you need a really slim installation. Does anyone know of something about the size of Damn Small Linux in a PPC version? That's really what we need. Paul in Seattle |
Yes i just need a browser, a text editor and samba... thats all i need for those computers. So i believe a small distribution with internet update would be the perfect solution. I read something about debian for PPC. Someone read anything about it?

ubuntu 4.10 or yellow dog 3.0
Hi i see info about yellow dog 3.0 and ubuntu 4.10, someone have any information about those distributions?
|
Basically most major distros have PPC versions (which will support your iMac): Debian, Fedora Core, Gentoo, Mandriva, OpenSuse, Ubuntu, Yellow Dog, and others. If you have 32 or 64 MiB of RAM you might not want to run a desktop environment or something like that.
P.S. the current version of Yellow Dog is 4.0.1, not 3.0 |
yes i know it
yes i know the current version of yellow dog is the 4.0.1, but i ask for 3.0 because my configuration is low memory, so i tink the 3.0 will work with 32 or 64 megas.
