Linux From Scratch?
 

Been looking at linuxfromscratch.org, and it seems interesting (although daunting). I'm interested in truly learning Linux and using it to it's full extent. I've installed and played with Mandrake a bit, but quite frankly it's not much more than Windows, and GUI vs GUI Windows wins. I'm rather new to Linux, although I'm somewhat familiar with the commands from MOO programming and administration, although I'm admittedly fuzzy. I don't know a lot about hardware, however, which could prove troublesome when setting up a system from scratch, but I have friends who can help out there.

Anyhoo, after getting bored with Mandrake, I took a gander at Slackware, which seems challenging enough for me, but I'd rather actually learn how things work instead of just having a hard time doing exactly what I did with Mandrake.

I'm not really sure what the point of my post is. Hmm. Suggestions? :)

Yeah LFS or Gentoo are good for that type of thingie you wanna do. Good luck!

If you want to learn, you should give Slack or Debian a try... and then you may want to try LFS once your comfortable.. but I wouldn't start out trying LFS until you get some concept and feel for Linux.

exactly. go from mandrake to slack, and once you're down with slack (and i mean DOWN) then give LFS a try. i'm pretty good with slack, and i still don't think i could handle LFS.

so unless you love pulling your own hair out, stay with slack for awhile. :-)

By now you must have realized that we've got the lead developer from LFS helping moderate the Linux From Scratch sub-forum here in distributions.

It's daunting, and it is hard, but the book, LFS 3.1, will get you through anything you could possibly need to know. Browse it online for a while. When you're done compiling LFS for the first time, which took alot of us here: Taz.devil, RecoilUK, Trickykid and I about 2-3 days to plug through, you'll know more than you would after a month of hand hacking away at Slackware.

And if you get stuck, there's nothing these guys couldn't help you get through. The 130+ post string by RecoilUK is evidence enough of that.

All it takes is the patience to create that one little partition for LFS (I recommend 3+ Gb), and then its so hard not to start.
