Lindows OS 4.5 My quick hate story
 

Hi all, Just wanted to blow some steam, so ill do it here. I just bought Lindows OS 4.5 as i wanted to try it out for my parents, and it said how easy it was even easier to install software!

Well, after downloading and burning the OS I installed it, which admitantly was very quick and easy, it detected all my hardware and and installed it.

Something along the lines went wrong i guess, as i am left with one monitor, which is monitor 1 that works perfectly, and another, monitor 2 which is working, but cant acess it :confused:

Then, lets go to Sound, well i have the sound half working, but whenever i use any applications the sound breaks up badly.

Software.... Now this is why i wanted to test it out, you see my mom and father want an os they can use that is not related to Windows.

Well i install software really quck and easy with click'n'run, but the only problem is half the software wont load once it is installed. I have had 4 system crashes in the last hour. When i try to load a piece of software that i just downloaded from the CNR, it seems to break the rest of my software and i have to reboot the machine,

Oh and dont let me get started on defaust setup as root user, that is just stupid, any linux user, new or old knows not to use root as a user account.

I will be getting my money back from Lindows as this is the worst software i have seen, even microsoft do better then that.

I personally will be staying with Debian, and ill looking for something simple for my folks, that works.

Why not get them Mandrake. Easy to install. Easy to use. Don't really have to know a lot about the system (if you'r parents are new to linux), runs nicely, and just about perfect for normal desktop usage.

i would stay with debian .... install your folks' system, with debian testing, and install synaptic, and they would be able to install software easly.

make your folks a nice screen with gnome 2.4. Don't upgrade the debian, it's not worth ... update and upgrade once in a while. if you use debian, you must know that the system is absolutly reliable.

I have unstable and testing, and i teel you that in desktopthere are no diferences, it's up to date

Mandrake is definitely a good idea, I got my copy almost a year ago, and my machine is much faster and more efficient than my roommate's comparable Win-blows system, while still being very easy to use and upgrade.

as a linux newbie, I have tried a few distros, and I would recomend mandarke to any newbie who wants somthing easy

Try out MEPIS. I heard that it is good. In fact, I've downloaded it and will be installing it soon.

Maybe a mac?
 

If your parents don't want to use Windows maybe they should get a Mac :P Personally my parents have enough trouble running Windows, I'd hate to see them in Linux. I'm an IT Manager and am taking IT Management in university and we never study or ever use Linux and even I have trouble when I try to run it!

I think ditch Lindows and try a different distribution.

I finally got in load on my work machine, after editing out nvidia from the XF86Config-4 file and replacing it with nv.

Stupid move by Lindows to load the nvidia module right from install !

Anyway, what I saw of Lindows was impressive, but nothing that another distribution couldn't do.

It's essentially cloning as much of the windows operability as possible, using KDE as the window manager.

I found it slow and unresponsive compared to Slackware 9.1

There's no way that your average computer user would be able to cope with the install if something goes wrong and there must be a lot of dissapointed people out there - Lindows does a good job of detecting everything, but it's clear that not everything will get detected.

If I decided to install a distribution for my folks, I'd go with slackware 9.1 which I would customise to the max, making it as simple as possible to use.

Practical Linux for Beginners...

Willing to try Lindows eh… Well if your out for ease of use out of the box you should look into….

XandrOS (Buy only) – Still looking into this one…
Lycoris (Free Download version but have to pay to use there software repositories)
Ark Linux 1.0 Alpha10.1 (100% free - and my personal favorite thus far)

All are strait to the point user friendly installs with everything the body needs… :D Like Lindows all are easy going. Unlike Lindows however, they seem to be totally configurable.

Debian, Suse, Mandrake, Redhat, Turbo, Slackware…. These my friend are not something you load for parents unless you want to be 24hr onsite support. These are great IF you know what you are doing. A weee bit to much power for beginners I feel. God knows I hosed a number of installs starting out on these. :tisk:
