Kubuntu 7.10 AMD64 installation
Hi, I'd like to know if there's anyone who installed it successfully. And the software support for it is good or bad? Or should I stick to the x86 version till certain bugs will dissapear?

Hi!
I've been running Kubuntu 7.10 X86_64 for a while and everything was relatively smooth. Some things did not work as well though. Flashplayer was a bit crappy to install. Once installed, it worked fine in Firefox and Konqueror, but not Opera (which by the way, was a beta version when I tried. There was no official stable release for Linux on x64 architecture). Running flash applets in fullscreen did not work for me, but I could live without it. The biggest trouble for me was wine. Not a single game or application worked with it. This was probably my fault, but at the end of the day, I saw no advantages in running a x64 bits OS for daily workstation usage. I am not a big fan of tweaking, so I switched back to Ubuntu x86 and it feels like a far smoother ride in getting things to work. I would perhaps choose a x64 bits OS on a server, but on the Desktop, again, I see no real advantage. |
I second that. To the "software support", you can just visit the websites of the software projects you're interested in (or even Ubuntu reposities), and see if they offer x86_64 packages. If there are such packages, that means they're "supported", and if not, then probably not -- or at least it means a whole lot of work.

Then I choose to keep it simple
Ok, guys, thanx a lot, I made my mind and I'll go 32bit for now. You saved me a lot of time.

Huh!
32bit Kubuntu ain't working either. I'll try Debian Etch :). I have an EPOX 8kda3+ nvidia3 250 GB MB with AMD64 3000+ processor, 1Gb DDR, Nvidia FX5200 VGA from Asus, and I end up with a sbin/modprobe abnormal exit and a Busybox command line :D. Oh my God! :))

Well, I tried the latest Ubuntu and I had no more problems whatsoever. Who knows why?
It's working and that's fine with me... :D |
