Kubuntu 6.10 crashed

Hi Everybody,

I've just received a KUBUNTU 6.10 DVD. Before I install it I tried to use it as a live CD, before installing the entire OS permanently, however it crashes with the following message:
"The application KDesktop (Kdesktop) crashed and caused
the signal 6 (SIGABRT)"

I'm just new in Linux and puzzled what that all means. Would somebody tell me what that message mean and how I made it working? I tried it in 3 compters, one which has already a working UBUNTU OS, an AMD/windowXP computer and an Intel/window XP computer ( all of them not a 64 processor)

Looking for forward for a helping hand.

1) make sure the downloaded image file's checksum matches the one shown at Kubuntu's download place (non-broken download)
2) after you burn the iso to a disc, use your burner's option if possible to check the burned data, if it was successfully burned (i.e. no broken data)
3) that error may be something else than KDesktop crashing because of itself; I myself got similar errors on all programs (even X) because of 'bad' display settings; when I tried to run it in 'safe graphics mode', with resolution as low as 800x600x16, it started working all right; after installing I then increased the resolution step by step until I found a decent, working resolution. (3D)display-drivers, if available from vendor, might help out, but it seems that wrong display settings (resolution, refresh rates, ...) might cause crashes.
4) do you get it in all computers or just yours? If in every pc you try it in (test as many as you can, don't trust two or three), your disc is probably broken (since that version of Kubuntu runs fine on a laptop I installed it in); if it works in other computers, then it's your computer's hardware and Kubuntu's settings that don't match right away -- this can be (pretty easily) fixed, depending on what it is.

KUBUNTU 6.06 DVD crashed

Hi B0uncer,http://linuxquestions.cachefly.net/i...s/confused.gif

Thanks for your suggestion, I really appreciate it.

I did not download the DVD, but I bought at the internet.
I tried the option to check the DVD disk for defects and it responded that Checksum 3 failed, whatever that means, hopefully you have more experience than I do.
The 3 computers weren't all mine, only one Window XP computer was mine, the other two was of my grandson and the third was of my acquaitence. I was wondering what happens when I install it instead of doing the live start. What do you think:confused:

Kubuntu 6.10 crashed

Hello B0uncer,
:)
Yoopee!!My Kubuntu 6.10 works on an ECS 755-A2 motherboard with aAGP Asus card, which has a nVidia GeForce MX4000. The memory on the motherboard is 1GB. I like the blue color of the KDesktop. I may change from Ubuntu with the brown colored GNOME to the Kubuntu. However I think I have to change the triden video card in my Ubuntu computer with the nVidia GeForce MX4000 graphic card.

Many thanks for your help,

BR,
