Knoppix S-T-D Tutorials Wanted

Okay... Having some background use with UNIX at the office, I've been playing with all kinds of Live-CDs, trying to get a feel for what will suit my personal taste and needs. It's been great fun, and I've enjoyed Debian based Kanotix the most so far. Which incidentally, I have not seen much discussion in this forum on this distro.
Then my teenager decided to start experimenting with hashing, cracking, and hacking. I don't want to discourage him, unless it includes illegal activity. Being the case, I felt a need to accelerate my knowledge on the subjects and was directed to Knoppix S-T-D. This distro is not as user friendly as others, but does come with a host of interesting tools. I've visited S-T-D.org and checked out their forum. I'm sure these guys know their stuff, but are a little arrogant and not eager to help-out a newbie with some basic questions.
The Knoppix STD Live-CD boots-up great, but doesn't recognize any of my hardware: wireless card, Ethernet, thumb drive, hard drive, etc. I've figured out that I need to load some drivers, but not sure how to get started. First, any suggestions how to load drivers to get the live-cd to recognize my laptop hardware. More general, any suggestions how to self educate with this distro and the included tools?
