knoppix question

I had a friend that knows nothing about computers. her system was not working and infested with virises..

so I booted up knoppix 3.7 and went to get some of her important files and put them on my usb pen drive. the problem was knoppix did not let copy anything.. saying they were read only files.. so I did su root and tryed to chmod 777 but i no luck..

I dont know knoppix well. I found another way to save her files but.. what should I have done?

thanks for your time

I think I know what happened. Knoppix (from the gui) treats all filesystems as read only by default. This includes your thumbdrive. After you mount it (either by clicking on it to open it, or right click and mount) you will need to right click on the icon and go to actions -> Change read/write mode. It will then ask if you are sure that you want to be able to write to the thumb drive.

Also, make sure that you unmount the drive or shut the system down before removing the drive. I don't think it matters anymore, but you want to make sure that all of the data is truly written before you yank it.
