If the data is important and is not already backed up, probably the first order of business is to recover the data, if possible. You will first need to determine where you are going to save the data to. Choices that come to mind are another hard disk in the system (either another disk already present, or adding one for this purpose), a removable medium like a flash drive, or sending the data across a network to another computer. There is a possibility the existing hard drive is starting to fail, so you might want to get everything set up before you fire up the system. When you are ready to go, I would suggest booting from a live CD. (If the original KNOPPIX disk is still around, you can use that.) You can then mount your hard drive partition and copy the data you need from it. If you need more specifics about how to do this, post back, letting me know which method you have chosen to back up the data. (BTW, if you want to copy across a network, the most straightforward way I know to do that would be having the other computer running Linux and sshd. If Linux is not installed on the other machine, that machine could be running Linux from KNOPPIX for this purpose.)
Once the data is safe, you then need to decide whether you want to try to fix the system, or just reinstall. Since the version of KNOPPIX installed is quite old, you might want to install a newer version. If you decide to repair the system, find out if this is the original software that was installed, or if has been being updated with apt. |
