Knoppix 4.0.2 - HD install - input/output errors on README files and docs

I tried to do the knoppix HD install (knoppix-installer) (debian version) I get lots and lots of input/output errors.

It feels like the list of included files was pared down at the last minute to conserve space but that the installation script was not edited to match, so it gets to about 60% (don't remember exact number) and I start getting errors like:

cp /usr/share/docs/packagename/README input/output error

What makes me suspect the bit about changes at the last minute is that all of the missing files are READMEs, Docs, txt, and htm files - nothing that would be sorely missed.

So, not too bad of a problem, right? Nuh-uh. Unfortunately, the cdrom seeks for each file for abt 2-3min which makes the install take wayyyyyy too long - I left it going overnight last night (at 4:30p) and it was not completed by this morning (8:30a) = 16+ hrs! It had only made it up to the Ms when I held in the power button for an ungraceful reboot, so I have no idea how long the full install would take.

Then, I tried to do the simpler install to HD of the "Knoppix CD on HD" version. It too bogged down unable to find certain files. This time, however, they were groff development font files.

==

I booted knoppix with the cdtest cheat code and the CD passed the test.

==

Would someone mind grabbing an old 3 GB (or whatever the minimum is [added 11/03/05 :) ]) drive and try the install to HD to verify this is not just me?

This may be something to fix for 4.0.3 :(

==

If it is possible to edit the installer script, can someone help me figure out where it is and how to edit it. I saw references to it in other posts, but nothing definitive.

Hmm, 3gb hard drive? That may be the problem. Knoppix fits on one CD and runs thanks to on-the-fly decompression. It's raelly over 2 gigs of compressed data. Once unleashed onto a hardrive, it's true size shows.

It *may* fit on a 3gb (I have fit on a 5gb drive) but you may be pushing it depending on how you setup the partitions. For this, I would reccomend only a / partition of 2.5gb or more if you can spare and the rest should be swap. However, this may be a tight squeeze. Anyone else know the exact size of a fresh knoppix install? It' s been a while since I last visited the king of the live cds.

I actually was installing to a 7Gb partition with 1 Gb swap - I was only asking someone to grab an older drive that they are no longer using (3 Gb was the first # that popped into my head) and attempt the CD install (not DVD)

To my knowledge, no one ever has tried it, gotten it to work, and responded back to me - I believe it's a flaw in the 4.0.2 release -- that certain somewhat unnecessary files were removed to make room, but their filenames were never removed from the installation script.

I did install 4.0.2 on hard disk and didn't have "this" issue.

you have to be careful about knoppix .. it's not tested for hd install .. .. simple test is .. run it from the cd (now i think dvd) .. and see if these issues persist .. if not then it's not a bug .. it's a feature:-))
asking someone to do the test you suggest is not needed

In the past I have run into issues with knoppix hd install, one being that English man pages don't get installed (at times .. i don't why .. may be if you were not careful to run lang=us when starting live cd) and other minor annoyances.
