Knoppix 3.1 install

i have just installed the german -english version of knoppix 3.1. has to be the easiest linux install available. downloaded and burned a cd, installed it into the cd rom, pressed the enter key twice, and bingo , kde 3 began, i think the install after starting the cd took 2 minutes, no formatting , no etho config, no sound card config. easy install.

is knoppix based on the debian linux systems?
thanks ronss

well, i sort of figured out what is happening. the linux system is booting from the cdrom and not actually installing . after you use this linux system, you shut down the computer, and the cdrom ejects. now i can boot the original linux system that is installed on the hard drive. also, debian based system.

ronss, if you interested you can install Knoppix to the harddrive. It does come with an install script. It is located in:

/usr/local/bin/knx-hdinstall

be sure when you run it that you use the sudo command in front:

sudo knx-hdinstall

I have installed it on one of my extra harddrives and it works good. The script is not all automated. But it does walk you through everything. It will load cfdisk(i think that is what it was) and you have to setup the partitions. I just setup a SWAP and the Main partition and it worked fine.

Then once you get it installed you can apt-get and update whatever you want. Makes for a very newbie Debian install.

Oh, one more thing. Be sure when you boot Knoppix you do:

Knoppix lang=us (double check that, but I think that is right)

If you don't, then it will install Russian I think. Which is not a big deal. You just have to change the language settings and restart X. I did that the first time I installed to the harddrive. I figured out how to change the language settings and later found out that I should have loaded with the english and it would have installed properly for me.

well, i have now installed lycrois, asp linux, and now am downloading demolinux. i am trying as many distro,s as i can. lycrois is trying to make there operating system easy to use for the newbie, but i am use to the traditional kde menu, etc. suse 8 still remains as one of my favorites. red hat 8 would have been great if they didn,t dissect it.

Nefarious, the Knoppix Bootable CD is all you need. You just boot with the Knoppix CD then drop to a command line and go to:

/usr/local/bin/

then type:

sudo knx-hdinstall

and follow the instructions step by step. Guess the harddest thing would be the partitioning. But, like I said above, just make a SWAP partition and then a main partition and it will install fine.

It's funny to try to walk your way around KDE in German, when you cant speak a word

After looking over the menu's I finally figured out what I had to click to go to english.

BTW: this was after a hard drive install. Guess they have the default lang set to German when you do a HD install.
