Keyboard stops working after a while in Suse 9.1
 

Hi

I'm running Suse 9.1 Personal Edition (mostly standard) on my Compaq nx5000 laptop. After running KDE for a few hours, my keyboard stops working. Keys don't work, my capslock light doesn't go on etc. The syslog doesn't mention anything strange. If I log out and log back in, the keyboard is restored. I'm not exactly sure how I could hunt this down - could someone please point me in the right direction.

I get a similar problem with a PS/2 keyboard. I've no idea what causes it but the act of changing video modes seems to aggravate it.

You might try unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back if that happens. That always clears it for me.

As rjlee indicated, it sounds like it may just be due to a loose or wobbly connection with the keyboard cable into the plug. I had a similar issue with a KVM switch, and it only turned out to be a not-quite-snug connection for the keyboard plug on the back of the KVM. Unplugging/replugging solved it. There may be another issue at play here, but I'd suggest checking the plug first. -- J.W.

I have exact the same problem with my Laptop (Packard Bell M7280).
As it is a laptop I can't check the plugs, they are all correct...

I have no problem working with WinXP.

Any ideas? Can it be a wrongly loaded driver?

Hi Adi,

Yesterday I have installed all the latest files. And with me the problem is gone :)
E.g. I have done an update to get the latest rpm packages.
This also included a fix for X11, maybe the problem might be in your older version.

Please update the rpm packages using Suse YOU. Or else you can use this perfect tool:
http://fou4s.gaugusch.at/ This is an easy program and replaces SuSe YOU.

Else you might try to install the latest kernel version and the latest KDE 3.2.3.
