Kernel Panic : VFS: Unable to mount Root fs on 08:02

I am using a suse 9.0 and tried to update via the YOU (Yast Online Update).
Among others I download the kernel-source-2.4.21-243 patch.
It Installed all packages and after reboot I get kernel panic :VFS :unable to mount root fs on 08:02.
In the manual it says that there might be a possible problem with the promise controller, so I tried ide=reverse but with no effect.
The hard drives were configured as sata-raid 1 in a 376 promise controller.
What can I do?

thank you all,
aratos
