KDE debugger sends X in a spin when run from command line

This is really weird. When I run the KDE (Mandrake 9.1) debugger from the command line, X goes off into a spin, consumes around 200Mb and I can barely re-gain control of my session. If I run it from the menu it works just fine. I don't see any error logs or messages, so I really can't investigate it any further. Can someone with Mandrake 9.1 open a console and do:

and see what happens? It could just be my PC of course.
