Just got SuSE 9.1 Q??? regarding upgrade...
I just purchased SuSE 9.1 Professional. Boxed version at BestBuy.
Previously I have been using SuSE 8.2 Professional on both my desktop (P4 2.4GHz, 512MB RAM, nVidia GeForce4 MX, SB Live 5.1, Benq CD-RW) and laptop (Dell c640, P4 2.0GHz, DVD-ROM/CD-RW).
Are there any issues I should be aware of???
Specifically:
1) I have DVD playback working on my laptop (no immediate plans to update my CD-RW on my desktop machine)... where is the best place to get updated mPlayer rpms???
2) I use a slightly older set of nVidia drivers for SuSE 8.2. Everything is working fine. What is the best way to make sure my upgrade is not going to nerf my video setup???
3) I use WineX version 3.3.2 from Transgaming. Are there any issues with upgrading from 8.2 to 9.1??? I don't want to break my newly acquired Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic support. Or that for Homeworld 2 or any other perfectly working game...
4) Is it more advisable to do a fresh install (saving both my /home partition and my storage partitions, of course), or to do an upgrade??? Should I revert first to the NV drivers before doing an upgrade, or should I be good to go???

uh.. nope. Got pretty much the same specs you got. Works better than any other distro ever.

SuSE's online updater works great for downloading the nvidia drivers. I would suggest going to the Nvidia site and looking over what they specifically say about the nvidia drivers for SuSE. Very helpful info.

The only game I've tried to get working is UT2004. Works better than in windows. I don't believe you'll have a problem installing winex-3.3.2, provided its in rpm format. Yast has been upgraded and works more seamlessly than ever before.

My honest suggestion would be to do a clean install. SuSE has updated almost every package, and besides its called a clean install for a reason. Have fun man!
oh one more thing. The dvd support for your laptop should be fine, except I believe SuSE has disabled dvd playback and/or particular playing of certain movies. Much like Red Hat disabled mp3 support in xmms. Licensing reasons. Not sure tho. I do believe I found alternate rpms on the net that would work, but I haven't tried it yet. Post back up if you have a problem.
after you install the rpms for xine, kaffene will work. trust me -it will work after installing the rpms from the site i posted, also, be sure to install with yast, that is important
well uninstall first xine-lib, and xine-ui if they are installed.
second install the libxine rpm (replaces xine-lib)
if you want dvd playback install libdvdcss.
if you want wmv and quicktime support install w32codec
third, if you want to use the xine gui instead of kaffeine (keeps crashing on my comp)
install xine-ui from the site as well.

...dunno about SC3000, but what does your glxinfo spit out about your ogl subsystem?
What kinds of fps do you get when you do a glxgears?
In all likelihood (if you're using an Nvidia card) you just have to reinstall the proprietary (i.e. from Nvidia) driver for your vid card to get humming once again

The laptop is all that I've tried upgrading so far. It has a Radeon 7500 chipset... which is not supported by proprietary ATI drivers. I want to make sure that I'm not having any problems I can't resolve before upgrading my desktop. To me, the laptop's system is "expendable" in that the only thing I truly need running on it is OpenOffice and DVD playback.
The desktop machine I am being more cautious with...
well that geforce 4 is pretty well supported. My sb 5.1 works great. So you should have no probs there. From your specs from the thread starter, I don't see any other issues from the hardware you posted.
yea, I don't think ATI started caring about Linux users until about 8500 I believe.
