is Quirky linux distro right for me?
Hello
this is my first post in here!
I have a real old pc:
1. CPU: 2GHz 512K
2. RAM: 512=2*256MB 133MHz
3. 32MB graphic onboard so my ram will be 480MB
no hard drive only cd and usb
I need to run wine and lamp
does Quirky distro is good for me or sth else?
thank you for answering

With a machine like that, which is already pretty constrained on RAM, I would rather go for a distro like antiX. I don't see any value in using a distro that loads the entire system into RAM when you don't have much RAM in the first place. Though, of course it depends on what you want to do with the machine. If you just use it to type your diary into a text editor Quirky will be fine, since you unlikely will use much memory, but if you intend to browse the web you want to use every megabyte you have for that, instead of storing a filesystem in it.

You can run from CD but to install software you need a place to store it and a CD ain't it. Wine brings in a lot of stuff and is another layer of overhead which consumes resources the machine doesn't have. Why not buy a hard drive, they're cheap. It won't make the computer faster but at least you'll have storage...

I'd try AntiX. It's the lightest distro with a proper GUI: I've seen it run simple programs in less than 60 MB, so that gives you 420 to play with. I've just loaded a program using Wine, and the extra load was just 44 MB, so Wine should be OK. But the only way you'll know about the rest of your requirements is to try - and, after all, it won't cost anything!

No hard drive? Then you need a AntiX frugal install with persistence to a pendrive.
You are bringing very little to the table and as far hardware and want the thing to carry a heavy load. EDIT: Probably cannot boot from pen drive in bios either.
Anyways
Frugal install on pendrive is easier on Puppy. Why Quirky may I ask is your choice? Because Barry K specifically states in his blog that Quirky is not a normal puppy linux and requires a full install vs a frugal install.

Read my blog, there is a script to install to a HD partition.
Also read my blog, frugal install is not supported.

Oops, I didn't notice the "no hard drive bit". As Tobi said, by the time Puppy is in RAM, you won't have enough left to do anything useful. A live AntiX, even if such an old computer can boot it, is going to be a bit slow with the sort of software you're considering. I'm a great champion of keeping old computers in use (like both of mine!) but you may be wasting your time here. First, try AntiX and see if you can boot it. If you can, it may be worth buying a cheap second-hand hard drive. Of course, if you can't that's an end to the matter.

By the way. Once when in your shoes. I bought for about $1.50 a IDE to CF adapter and ran a freebie 8 gig micro drive on a older IBM A22M. I could have used a CF card but I already had the micro drive handy.

Slitaz requires twice the memory that Antix does: see the documentation. Tiny Core (besides being rather tricky to set up) runs in the memory, so it's not so tiny if you use a lot of software: see my review on this site.

Should be able to run any Linux system, if you don't go for the heavy desktop environments (KDE, Gnome, Cinnamon, Unity).

But why? It just makes things much more complicated for no real reason I can think of.

Wine and LAMP can be used with any general purpose distribution.
