Maybe you could try Caldera. Its rpm based like red hat and mandrake, but its a little different. I had used their eDesktop 2.4 version a while ago.. it wasnt too bad, and would be one of my reccomendations to someone new to linux, other than mandrake and redhat. I'm just not sure what any other newer versions are like though. Cant say that I'm all that interested in finding out what their venture with UnitedLinux will be like either. I can't decide if I think its a good or bad thing..

CRUX is a lightweight, i686-optimized Linux distribution targeted at experienced Linux users. The primary focus of this distribution is "keep it simple", which is reflected in a simple tar.gz-based package system, BSD-style initscripts, and a relatively small collection of trimmed packages. The secondary focus is utilization of new Linux features and recent tools and libraries. CRUX also has a ports system which makes it easy to install and upgrade applications.
