solved the problem, and my suspicions were right, it was hardware related. the creative labs 12-10-32 cd-rw would not work installling red hat 9 or suse 8 for some reason. could be that it did not support the type of media .

solution-installed my creative labs 12 x dvd player, BINGO, off to the races.

one other note, make sure you have the jumpers set right on the drives too.

later

now problem is solved. for some reason, my gig ga-7dxr+ board and ibm hard drives, got 2 of em , 45 and 60 gb, do not like linux, i believe it,s motherboard specific. i swaped out the gig board and stuck in my abit kg7-r board, attached one of the hard drives, and off to the races, have now about 70 % installed and still chucking away at it.

very strange, both boards have the amd 761 chipset, but why linux likes the abit board and not the gig board is beyond my intelligence. anyone give me a reason???????????????
