Install of Linux
 

I was wondering what version of Linux can i put on a machine that was built in 1996 and was built by Comtrade. Please help. It was top of the line in its prime and I want to learn Linux better then what i was taught in school. Anyone have any ideas????

Do you know anything more than the machine was build in 1996. Are we talking a pentium, 486, k6, sun spark. How much ram does it have. Any idea of how much space you have on the hard drive?

Linux was around back that then too. Not sure if a machine that is 286 is of any use though.

It has a pentium 200mhz. the ram i am not sure on but i know the hard drive is either 15 or 20 GB. The use of it is to teach me Linux more in deepth for school. I have the basics but i want more. lol

space will not be a problem for you, check you ram in the bios on a machine that old it is good idea to have double the ram size for swap. I know suse 8 could run on a 486. Slackware, and debian for sure have version that will run on machines that slow. Personally I would go Debian. If you can get through the install you will be really set. If not post in the Debian form. I'm going through the fun of a gentoo install right now. best of luck

I'm not quite sure if your post is in the correct forum here.

You can - however - get a ROCK system built for pentium (pentium-mmx probably in this case) from me within a few days. Within two days or even one day if you don't want X.
Not meaning to be rude here, but if you don't want to specifically install ROCK you are in the wrong forum I'd say :)

Try Puppy Linux - it's a small live distro that is very fast, runs in memory and can be installed on the HD if so desired....

Ultima Linux would be a good option for you. It is compiled for 486, so it will surely work on your machine. You've got plenty of disk space so you can just keep installation simple and install the whole lot. If RAM is tight, just use one of the smaller window managers it provides instead of KDE, and you're in business. Ultima is fully Slackware 10.2 compatible, so you get all the good things that go with Slack.
