How do I install Fluxbox in SuSE 9.1 Pro?
How do I install Fluxbox in SuSE 9.1 Pro?
Forgive my lack of knowledge. I have to start somewhere though.
Ive downloaded the RPM from http://clanforums.dyndns.org/~david/linux/fluxbox/
" note install dir: /usr/bin " - What is this telling me to do exactly?

Install with:
rpm -ihv fluxbox-0.1.14-1.i686.rpm
Then logout and login again changing the window manager to Fluxbox.
Hope this helped!

as above...
the file you will have to change or add in your /home direcotry is either .xinit or .xsession. usually adding the line...
exec /path/to/fluxbox
will do the trick.

Tried that, ldconfig just loaded for a little bit then dropped to the next bash prompt, suseconfig said command not found, tried a reboot, no option of flux and boots straight into kdm.

The command is /sbin/SuSEconfig (very case sensitive ) and should be run as root.
fluxbox seems to be available on packman and from guru's repository. Try to add these server to your YaST sources:
Change Source of Installation -> Add -> FTP/HTTP
server: packman.iu-bremen.de
directory: suse/9.1
server: ftp.gwdg.de
directory: pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/rpm/9.1
Sorry, I don't have other mirrors at hand, but have a look at the sticky thread about YaST update sources for more information.

tried the ldconfig and then the /sbin/SuSEconfig it ran through some stuff, I rebooted, it didn't load x at first, reboot again and back into kde... I had installed from the rpm, I'll try using yast, but will it make a difference?

It will check for unresolved dependencies and tries to solve them automatically (if possible). This will most probably work fine if you choose sources that are made for your SUSE version.
