I don't know if the problem resides in Crunchbang, Debian, xfce, or my hardware, or....?

I just installed the new Crunchbang, based on Debian Squeeze. It automatically set the resolution very high (1200+ x 1024, or some such) on my small CRT screen. That makes the screen fonts almost unreadable to my 70 year old eyes. More appropriate display choices are displayed. but when I try to use them:

Yes, I get bigger screen fonts, but the program windows are so large that they won't fit on the screen anymore. A screen resolution of 1024X768 would be about right, but choosing that crowds the right hand side of the screen clear *off* the screen.

There is no xorg.conf, and if there were, I wouldn't know how to edit it.

Is there a way to control this "automatic setup" that seems to have supplanted the use of xorg.conf? Or is there a better or easy answer?

To make matters worse, I can't seem to get on Crunchbangs forums.

I'm still a newbie, but I would advise you to lookup the command xrandr. There are some good tutorials and man pages on the web. I used xrandr to get the correct resulution on a plasma TV and it worked for me, after some investigation. I think you will find your answer there.

Thanks, van Zeller. I may give that a try. I reinstalled, and got a better result, but still not adequate. Running out of time, because the first part of the month coming we intend to leave on a 5 or six month missions trip.I'm taking that one with me, and may get it working right once we get to our destination.
