Help! No startup!

My Mandrake Linux 9.2 will not startup. It shows the little white bar to show how much it has loaded, but then it goes straight to what I think is text mode. It asks me for my login and password, but then it does nothing. It only tells me the last time I went on. The only thing I can do is press escape, but then it gives me an incredibly long list of directories. What can I do so I can startup

Try typing "startx" without the quotes after you login. Technically linux is started, you are just in what's called "run-level 3" which is basically the command line. If the startx command works and you want to be able to permanently boot into the graphical interface, then it's fairly straight forward to set up.

hi .. if that does not work and it returns to the console (black screen) you might have to configure your X server with "xf86config" (hopefully madrake lets you configure it that way)
