Help! Need Xfree86 4.3 !

I'm using RedHat 8.0, which I love, but my craptop's video board (a Trident) is only accelerated in X 4.3.0 . I got the .tgz's from XFree86's FTP, but installing them made my graphical login go away, and startx gives my twm... how can I install it cleanly? It must have something to do with the config files it overwrites during install, but keeping the old ones isn't bad?

Questions:
1. Which version did you upgrade from.
2. Did you backup the old config files?

If you used to use a pretty up-to-date version (ie; the one which comes with RH 8.0), then you can simply restore the old config fies; they work fine.
