Have you tried calculate-linux?
I noticed calculate-linux on this page:
http://without-systemd.org/wiki/inde..._distributions
Has anyone tried this distro? One part sounds interesting. The cls version has a custom image builder. Have you tried it? How custom does it allow you to get?

Yes, I have and found the distribution's package management to be a bit quirky at first but definitely a time saver compared to plain Gentoo linux but at the cost of slightly reduced performance compared to self-compiled packages. It assists with not requiring someone who's less experienced with Gentoo to learn the intricate inner workings of Gentoo's emerge use flags. About a year back, I tried Funtoo linux as well. I couldn't properly compile the MATE desktop but got twm working minimally so I could have multiple terminal windows. If I recollect properly, the issue stemmed from difficult to resolve dependencies with a few conflicting USE flags. To this day, I haven't touched Gentoo or Funtoo though I am the most familiar with their terminal syntax to this day. At least I learned something. I hope my knowledge may lend support to others. If nothing else, Calculate Linux prevents the uninitiated from the headache of trying to learn everything at once and is the only Gentoo-based distribution I'd consider installing today.
