good user friendly distro for freakin old pc??
A friend brought his uncle's computer to resurrect- IT"S A PACKARD-BELL P1 70Mhz w/ 8megs OF RAM!!??
does anyone know of an old distro that's still around with a nice easy gui that will run nicely on this machine? |
Vector Linux 1.8 would be worth trying. The 8 mb of ram is a killer though.

have a look at zip slack
slackware.com but i haven't used that regards |
thanks for the reply-
a couple of questions about Vector Linux 1.8 though, is it free or no? can I download it or do I have to buy and wait for the cd? also, I was poking around and stumbled across Grey Cat 3 might this be a better choice? |

You can certainly install Linux on it, but I doubt you'll get much of a GUI running, far less any useful GUI apps. If you're looking for a cheap Linux box you can get one for under $300 from Fry Electronics, but if you're bent on using that Packard Bell all I can do is wish you luck! :) |

I've no experience good or bad with grey cat. From the looks of it, and what little info I read at Icewalkers.com it looks like it would be worth a try as well. Based on an older version of Slack, and pretty stripped down is something both these distros have in common. |
redhat 5.0 :-)
in fact, i found my first redhat cd (ver 5.0) in a system with almost the same specs. |
