GNOPPIX - How do I install?
Hey,
I've always wanted to use Debian, and tried the Debian installer awhile ago but had no luck. My USB mouse didn't work, and it reminded me of what Suse looked like in version 7. I came across KNOPPIX the other day and tried it out and was really impressed. Everything worked instantly and I used it to install to the hard drive which only took about 30 minutes. However, I HATE KDE and really wanted Gnome 2.4 but had trouble installing it. Then I came across GNOPPIX. I downloaded this and booted it up and it was perfect. However, when I open the GNOPPIX folder and double click Install GNOPPIX to Hard Drive, I'm having some problems. I have a 40g drive, with 30g my Windows XP partition and 10G for Linux. I partitioned everything out then ran the installer. However, it says pick what drive you want to install to and my options were 1) 40G and 2) 0MB so I picked 1 thinking it would ask me what partition I wanted, but instead of said Setting up Swap space and I lost my entire system. How do you pick what partition to install this to without losing all your partitions? Thanks so much!
Lee

If that thing already hosed your system once you might want to think about installing knoppix and just install gnome afterwards - apt-get gnome - or something like that.

I find it difficult..
I have tried KNOPPIX. But the problem is that when I was using that I only had a 3gb partition and there wasn't enough space for KDE and gnome. I'm not that great in debian/linux so I wasn't sure how to uninstall all the KDE crap properly so there's no trace of it or any of its programs left so I thougth gnoppix would be better for me.

Yeah there is. But I'm talking about in gnoppix trying to install it. I didn't think the apt-get install gnome in knoppix was gnome 2.4, I'll check it out again. My main problem was that I had only made a 3gb partition for Linux and it wasn't enough for everything. I'll give it another try.

I was going to download the gnoppix live cd tonight and try installing it on my ThinkPad without removing Windows XP. Now I think I will wait. I am having trouble finding installation instructions for it. Very interested to hear other experiences!

I just downloaded and burned gnoppix .8 and tried it on my thinkpad (booted from CD). I was really impressed. Gnome 2.6 on my thinkpad looked great. Was also looking for install instructions. Probably something like running "Gnoppix-installer" or something like that? Anyway it really looked nice and I might install it after I put another hard drive in my T22.

So ... how do you install Gnoppix to HD?
OK ... I've always wanted to try out debian, but I've always had some sort of trouble getting it installed. Tonight (after a few years of using Mandrake) I tried to install debian but had trouble getting it to recognize and setup my network.
So I downloaded Gnoppix .8
With a small continual reboot problem because X kept crashing ... I finally put the right boot parameters and it's looking good ;-) I like GNOME (not KDE).
This is the closest I've gotten to having a debian box. If only I could install it to the HD.
So ... how do I install it to the hard drive? Is there some sort of program I'm missing in the menu called "Install Gnoppix to your HD"?
