This can start a very long thread. I believe both are very good and probably both have equal amounts of pros and cons with them. I tend to find myself booting into GNOME more often. Even though I like KDE 2. Here is what most people would respond to with that type of question:

Try them both out and use the one you prefer.

Most of the time if I need to use a KDE app, I just load it in GNOME as I boot into it more often. Maybe because its my default. Maybe I should change that and if I changed my default to KDE, it would be an opposite, I would boot into KDE more often.

Best thing to do is try them both out, install them both. Visit both websites and do some comparisons there on them. This is really a opinion type question and your going to get different responses from everyone. But me, I tend to use whatever really. But that is just me.

Well I use KDE, but that's mostly bekause it was inkluded as the default window manager in SuSE. KDE is nice and the Konqueror browser is coming along nicely. IIRC gnome is the default window manager for RH. It's gnice from what I've gnoticed but you gneed to get used to the gnomenclature.

KDE, no Gnome, no KDE, noooooo Gnome, no no no KDE.......uhhhh not really sure.......

Gnome used to be the most Linux pure desktop, with KDE using QT which wasn't fully under the GPL (I think!), but now they are both as good as each other.

You can customise GNOME more easily (I do like using it with Sawfish), but KDE is more stable IME. The new GNOME file manager Nautilus is complete bloat-ware, and totally slowed down my system. It's a good job you can uninstall it and using gmc as the desktop manager.

I've just ordered SuSE 7.2 which I hear gives you quite a big nudge towards KDE, but I'll probably install both so I can run GNOME and KDE apps.

I like KDE alot. ALthough GNOME is the GNU desktop, I just like KDE more. KDE is more cheery. But, sometimes I like the 'slick' feel of GNOME. I usually use KDE because, in my opinion, it's much easier to use. I also like the icons in it.

when u get down to it, it's basically a matter of which you think looks better. i don't think either one really does any function better than the other. it's just a matter of looks and interface.

I'll just point out that you don't have to use Gnome or KDE for your GUI. There are lots of Window Managers out there that you can try.

I've recently started using BlackBox which is very nice.

i'm with KDE for the moment... coz i like its look and feel as well as the fact that it does seem a lot more stable than Gnome (i've uninstalled gome from my box)...

but it's probably a personal thing... lol

Well, i've said it before, but my standpoint is:

KDE is for dull people

Gnome is for slightly less dull people. e.g. me.

I always find it strange how it seems that the more high level, and technical someone is, the worse their computer, and the more low level the programs they tend to use are.

I've used the top of the range programs for VLSI chip design, and they really are the most obtusely made programs i've ever seen. Ugly, cumbersome, but ppl in that deep seem to prefer the lower spec every time...

BUT who in their right mind seriously can use twm without exploding in frustration, getting that stupid grid up every time they want to load a program etc.. ewwww.

aawwwww...

but gnomes are meant for the garden...?

to re-iterate (and in line with the spirit of linux...) it's all about the personal freedom of choice. try it, keep what you like, discard the rest... works for me (unless i don't really know what i'm discarding and then i'm heading for the 'hitting myself on the head with a spade' therapy)

agreed on twm though... but then again, i've always considered myself some class of doofus...(check again my therapy)

lol

GNOME or KDE? why not both?

This is what is Linux. A freedom to choose.
