Gnome Keyboard/Modem Problems with SuSE 9.0

Hello to all.

I have recently installed SuSE 9 to a Compaq laptop (NX9005) and have two outstanding problems:

1) The software modem is correctly identified at install (YEAH!), but once dial up properties are set up in Yast2, it fails to initialize the modem (BOO!).

I tried to install the Connexant modem driver that I found on the Linuxant site (http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/), but it balks, stating it won't run on SuSE 9. Not a great tragedy, I've got a Xircom card I've got to work, but would like to know if others have had this and if possible, correct it.

Also, when using the Xircom card to dial in, the speaker doesn't work (although "speaker on" is selected in the set up). I've just been looking at the dial in log on kinternet/qinternet to see when my connection has been established, so no great tragedy. Just would be nice to get it to work.

2) I've gone back to using Gnome with this install after using KDE exclusively for 8.1 and 8.2. I really like the new look and crips graphics. Anyway, I need to be able to swap between a German and an English keyboard, but for the life of me can't find out how to do this under Gnome.

Under KDE it was no problem - just go to Control Centre, Regional Settings, and set up all the languages you want.

Does Gnome not have a similar facility and if so, can someone please tell me where. I really would like to be able to switch quickly between a German and English keyboard.

Thanks in advance.
