I've tried several times to compile and run kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.17-gentoo-r8 but I've had positively no luck. The kernel and it's modules compile and install fine using both genkernel/make. However, when initramfs starts up, instead of activating udev so it can find my real root, it activates mdev. Of course it can't find my sata drive with mdev, and fails to boot the kernel. I've wiped out my .config and tried to configure it using the stock defaults from the installation cd. Still no luck...
I've also looked in the following file..
/usr/share/genkernel/generic/initrd.defaults
And found the following line
# Default to the udev device manager
USE_UDEV_NORMAL=1
