gentoo: emerge system: crap!
I'm not saying emerge is crap; I'm saying "crap" as in it crapped out, rolled snake eys, box cars, etc.
OK, I'm installing gentoo 2004.3 and and proceeding into Stage 3. That means I run
emerge system
Well, everything goes fine for a few hours. Then it craps out on a certain package:
Code:
>>> emerge (1 of 44) net-misc/rsync-2.5.6-r3 to /
>>> Downloading ftp://ftp6.uni-erlangen.de/....
..............failed: Host not found.
>>> Downloading http://gentoo.binarycompass.org/...
...
Proxy request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not Found
16:01:28 ERROR 404: Not Found
...
...
...
!!! Couldn't download rsync-2.5.6-proxy-auth-1.patch. Aborting
#
So how can I go about resolving this in order to complete the steps to move to Stage 3? Are there other sites I can tell emerge to search to download the file? Can I download and instasll it manually? If so, what are the steps?
Thanks.

ahhhh....that'll be an ipv6 type ftp server then and i bet you're on an IPv4 connection (just like most people are)
Simply means that the default download mirror list as created by that mirrors command is no good for you. Go to gentoo.org, find four full urls for mirrors local to you and type over the ones in your make.conf file
sorted.

Also use the --resume parm on the emerge - no good redoing all that again
edit - nano is the usual Gentoo editor. See the handbook
