Gentoo disagreeing with Xorg/KDE

The first time I ever tried to install Gentoo, it worked like a charm.

This is the second time however.

Got my kernel to boot... #emerge kde... wait 2 days. Set up my xorg.conf and all render a blank screen:

startx (w/ rc.conf set to various things)
startkde (actually gives me an error complaining no xserver is running)

Xorg gives me no obvious error ("EE" or whatever). My screen switches and gives me that static-y unstaticing sound... and the green light goes yellow.

Should I sync and re-do a 2 day compile?
