Next week I'll buy a Core 2 Duo processor and I've studied a little to figure out the best way to cram the most power out of it. I guess the best way would be Gentoo 64bit multilib (to be able to view flash-movies and use win32codecs). But how do I go about installing Gentoo? Should I use the amd64 disc (and follow the amd64 install guide, as stated here: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Safe_Cflags#X...tium_4_P6xx.29, regarding Xeon w/EM64T (Intel) (also Pentium 4 P6xx) ), use the CFlags here: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Safe_Cflags#I...oe.2C_Merom.29, and compile the kernel like this: http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Intel_Core2_Duo? Will that make the kernel SMP? Is there anything else I should know? And what about GRUB (any adjustment needed for 64bit)?
First off, yes you'll want the AMD64 guide and disk. Are you sure you don't want the section about Core Duo/Solo from the first link you sent? Finally the tips on the last link combined with the tips from the install guide should be enough for you.
After you get Gentoo installed run an emerge -e world so that everything is compiled properly for your system.
I wouldn't want the CFlags for Intel Core Solo/Duo (Yonah), I guess, because that processor has another core than Intel Core 2 Solo/Duo/Quad (Allendale, Conroe, Merom, Kentsfield) (which has two cores, and can do 64 bit, which Yonah cannot). At least, that has been my impression of things.
