Gentoo 2006.0 LiveCD Installation Freezes on Additional Packages
Hi,
I'm installing Gentoo on a Pentium III box w/ 512 mb's of ram, using the LiveCD and the graphical installer. I have followed the docs on http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handboo...?part=1&chap=3
and selected most of the packages. Now, it is still 'installing,' but stuck on emerging kde-base/kdebase-3.4.3-r1(25/297)
for about 2 hours now. The installation took roughly 45 minutes to get to where it stalled, and it looks like the bottom bar showing total progress is nearly full, so I concluded that it must have stalled. Now I don't know what to do, should I reboot, or wait even longer? Please voice your suggestions. Thanks

I've never used the graphical gentoo installer, but I would assume that it (in true Gentoo style) is compiling kde. kdebase takes quite a while to build, in my experience. Let it run.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll let it run 'till the morning (~14 hrs), then we'll see what comes out.
UPDATE: Another hour, another hope, another dissapointment (7:45 pm)
EDIT: Since there are no cdrom, or hard drive, or processing noises, I have currently assumed that it has, in fact, stopped. If I cancel it at this stage, is there a way to resume the rest of the packages? Also, is retrying the installation my only option?

You probably don't have to start all the way over. If I read your screenshot right you should be able to chroot back into your Gentoo root directory and continue the installation from where it froze up on you. I don't suggest using the graphical installer though, last I checked its still buggy. The command line is better for you anyway. Its like cough syrup, it tastes terriable but it makes you feel better.

Hey thanks to all who posted, it has now advanced by 5 packages. And next week when I install gentoo on my main machine, I'll make sure to use Penguin of Wonder's cough syrup

Oh and about the command line installer; is it like the minimal install cd or is it more intuitive?

I'm not real sure what you mean by that. If your following the handbook you should, in theory, have no problems. That can't be easily fixed anyway. The x86 version of Gentoo, as with most distros, is extremely stable because of its age. The handbook is very well written and documented. I recomend using the Universal Install Disk though. You can still do the command line intsall with it.

Unfortunatly, the universal cd is not available for x86/i586 on the Gentoo site http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/where.xml . And by my question I meant whether you have to manually issue all of the commands/instructions or whether it is a question/answer based installation.

The minimal is fine. You'll just have to have internet access to complete the install. It is command driven. Not Q & A.

Try posting in the gentoo forums at forums.gentoo.org;
you'll get lots more responses. Nothing against linuxquestions,
but those forums are full of gentoo veterans.
