FOSS alternative to Untangle's 'Application Control' module
Hi,
I've recently installed the 'Untangle' linux firewall/gateway, & while it provides the functionality I need, it does so via a couple of commercial add-ons which cost $25/month each.
I use it to block tor, torrent, & p2p traffic in my local network via the 'Application Control' module. As well as access to warez sites via the 'Content Filter' module.
From what I was able to determine through Google searches, pfSense is another which provides Layer 7 blocking functionality, but when I install it to my box, it reboots repeatedly from a kernel panic condition that happens every time I save a change to its config- so that one won't work.
I also tried Smoothwall, but it didn't do what I need- or at least I didn't see how while browsing its configuration interface.
The Untangle distro's functionality is near perfect, but would cost me $50/month. It has web caching too, which would be nice to be able to implement, but that's a commercial module, too. I just can't afford it all.
Which other linux/bsd gateway/firewall distro would provide the same functionality as is provided with Untangle, but for free?
