Hi, i have used Red Hat as my server for about a year now. I started using 7.3 and now im on 9. i reciantly swithed my main box from windows to linux. Now i wanted to stick to RH but i thought i would try Fedora 2.
I found my problems with Fedora, things dont work etc. and im currently formattiong my box and installing RH9! i think that Red Hat should have kept making standard user OS's not just enterprise servers. RH9 is much better than Fedora 2, from my opinion. I would be instrested to know if anyone else has found this?
Despite the problems with Fedora Core, it seems to me like a decent distribution. I certainly wouldn't recommend it to newbies (because of the inherent problems of being a test distro), but I happen to like the package selection and community support that Fedora has. RH9 was probably the last stable release in this line of RH products, but it is quickly becoming outdated.
Besides, if stability is what I want, I'm not going to use Fedora or Red Hat. Slackware would be my #1 choice...
One issue to consider with RH 9 is that Redhat officially ended support for it back in May or April. As a result, you will need to manually download and install any security patches, etc. This is not a dealkiller but it is an important factor to consider IMO.
Naturally any existing installations of RH9 will continue to function just fine, but due to this end-of-life decision, it becomes incumbent upon you to keep the machine up to date. -- J.W.
since posting this thread i encountered a problem. i got RH9 all setup and i then descovered that because i have my NIC build into my mainboard RH9 did not include the suporting drivers :| and i really hate searching for drivers online! so i reinstalled fedora2. does anyone know of a way to check a hard drive to see if it is corrupt etc. because it is very new (well a couple of months old) and i keep getting errors, last night i was happly working away setting up my system and suddenly a terminal popped up with an error something like 'disk I/O error'. i could no do anything so i rebooted my b0x and when it came to booting the HDD i got boot dist error :S. this was at like 2.30 ish in the morning so as you can probally guess i wasnt going to start working out the problem etc. so i simply swiched of my computer and went to bed! i tried it when i got up this morning and i got the same errors, i then tried reinstalling windows (no laughing plz ) and i got the same 'Disk I/O' error message. so i left it again because i had to go out. i came in tonight and tried everything again and it worked perfectly fine :S. oh yeh anyway that was my story what i was getting to is can anyone help me with this little problem? e.g. can anyone sugest and software to check the hard disk for errors etc?
