Fairly priced Red Hat

Where do I obtain a version of Red Hat at a reasonable price. I started off installing Mandrake which I bought on 2 CDs for £5 (that's about $8) but pretty soon discovered that most of the advice I was getting from this site was written from a RedHat perspective. I even spent $40 on a book that was rccommended on this site (Linux Administration - A Beginner's guide by Steve Shah) which is very much based on RedHat. This came with a free distribution of RH 6.1. Both the book and the distribution are seriously out of date.

The 7.1 distribution available from the RedHat website is $40 - not too bad. But they want to charge me another $60 for shipping. It's not that I'm mean but so far I've had very little success with Linux and while I am still keen to persue it I don't want to spend too much dosh until I've had a bit of success.

Perhaps if I hadn't bought a FA311 network card everything would be working like a dream and I would have remained in blissful ignorance about the complexities of Linux administration.

Do you have a fast connection and burner, you can get copies for free from download at www.linuxiso.org

Also another route would be to get one from maybe www.freelinuxcd.org , they give them away for free.

Or you can try maybe www.linuxmall.com , they usually have pretty good prices... starting in the single dollars or so.

Thanks,

$12 shipping charge from linuxmall.com is a lot better that $60. The $2 off the retail price is a bonus.

It's on it's way - watch this space.

I think most just don't have the connection speed to do any type of large downloads.

Yes, what about us poor guys with 56k modems!!

I also like to support firms suppling Linux distros to others. I like to think that it will help to promote linux to the far reaches (but $60 shipping IS alot!)

hey now the first time i download linux i download a 600mb iso on a 28.8 connection

I just downloaded three of the Linux Red Hat 7.1 CD's on a 56k
modem. It took about 2 weeks for the first 2 CD's. I just left my
coputer plugged in and downloading while I was at work. 8
hours a day of pure downloading pleasure. I payed about $12
for my current Mandrake distro and still had to wait 4 days to get
it. Dowloading took a little longer but now I can go out and eat a
steak on Saturday night with the money I saved!

trickykid 07-24-2001 08:24 AM

All I can say is... way too much time to burn...

2 weeks is a long time. They probably came out with several new distros during a period of that long. :D

If you have to download it and you're using windows, there's a download manager called getright that lets you schedule times for your computer to dial the internet and resume dialing. You can schedule it to hang up too. I would guess that there are programs like this if you are already running linux and you want to download a different distro.
