External HD install for use with a few comps.

Hi,
Wondering if it's possible to install to an external HD for use on more than one computer, without having to resort to installation of a liveCD.

I did find this thread:

showthread.php?t=349810

Just looking for a little further clarification - essentially whether there are any specific steps I ought to take to make this workable, and further if there are particular distros people think I should avoid (because of different hardware detection etc.).

Will the fact that one of the comps is a laptop complicate matters in terms of hardware detection?

Do people think this is likely to be a workable setup?

thanks,
Shedhog

P.S. Sorry the above isn't a link...got a message saying I can't post URLs until I've made five posts.

I am going to respond even though I haven't tried this scenario. It can be done and yes you will probably have trouble with hardware detection. One thing about some of the LiveCD distros is that you can set up a "persistant directory" that has hardware specifics, runtime scripts, etc., for each machine on each machines h/d or even on a usb key to shorten boot time. Sorry I can't offer more details.
