Try running evolution from a terminal console, this will allow you to see if there are any specific errors (post them here) which will give a clue as to what's wrong.
As for updates, there should be some at Ximian.org....but I use 1.2.2 and it works flawlessly for me.

i've been using v. 1.4.4 but still have problems from time to time...ie. i'll open up evolution, and it will crash on the first try....second try it will let me in...i'm running the whole XD2 on SuSE 8.2...i just started to use thunderbird.... mozilla.org dood...check it out..i likez it.
