Easy 2 do Boot Knoppix from Any USB stick

If you have a 1 gig USB stick and a little time , it is possible to make it boot Knoppix. Your computer must be set to boot usb first. If you cannot boot usb from the bios there is a workaround. This is a fairly simple process. First you need to make the usb stick bootable FAT not FAT32 or NTFS, the second thing is to copy all the files from the knoppix 4.0 distribution to the stick. Third you need to copy loadlin to the drive. and forth you need to create a text file named autoexec.bat containing the line "loadlin /boot/isolinux/linux initrd=/boot/isolinux/minirt.gz knoppix lang=en" (without the qoutes) and copy it to the usb stick. Yes you can copy and paste from this text.
This can all be acomplished from a windows desktop, and has been tested on Sandisk, Pny, Crucial ($30.74 here locally), and Lexar usb sticks.

1.You need SP27213..from ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp27001-27500/ if this doesn't work try http://www.docjelly.com/Blog/SearchV...?q=SP27213.exe
This is a link to the hp service pack that will make the usb stick boot. Incidently if the hp link works for you there are scads of drivers and programs there.

2.You will need a set of boot files these should work http://selfdestruct.net/misc/usbboot/ or you can google hpusbfw_bootfiles and select another source. Also the SP27213.exe appears to be here.

3. You need a copy of knoppix. this is the file name you want. KNOPPIX_V4.0.2CD-2005-09-23-EN.iso
and you can get it here..ftp://ftp.cise.ufl.edu/pub/mirrors/knoppix/ .this will take a couple of hours to download with broadband..(thursday nights work well.)If you use nero tell it to burn disk from an image..after it completes you will have a working copy of knoppix. You can go to the knoppix website for a list of download mirrors.http://www.knoppix.org/

4. Loadlin http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/d...?arch=i386&fil
e=pool%2Fmain%2Fl%2Floadlin%2Floadlin_1.6a-6_i386.deb&md5sum
=92b54928e0517fc5fc507eb162e48421&arch=i386&type=main

5. Don't forget to make the autoexec.bat file and copy it to the usb stick.

If your computer won't boot from usb you may boot from the usb stick by booting from the Knoppix cd and typing "knoppix fromhd=/dev/sda1" without the qoutes at the splash screen.
