Dual Booting XP pro with SuSE 9.1
 

Hey all, i just registered, great forums, got a problem though, thought i'd post it here. I have a 55 gb HDD and have XP pro on it using the NTFS file system. I wanted to set up a dual boot with SuSE Linux 9.1. So i used partition magic to resize my windows partition to 30 gb. I made a empty partition 24 gb and then the swap partition 512gb.

I am totally new to Linux, and dual booting, so after i did that i stuck in my SuSE 9.1 personal cd. I restarted, it booted up and it started installing, i didnt really configure anything during it's installation, and it installed with GRUB. I got Linux installed and running, and then when i restarted to boot up windows, this is what came up:

root(hd0,0)
filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7
chainloader+1

I looked in SuSE control center in partitioning and this is what shows:

/dev/hd1 29.3 gb HPFS/NTFS /windows/c
/dev/hd2 517.7 mb Linux swap swap
/dev/hd3 26.0 gb linux native Linux

so what it all comes down to is, is there a way to boot my windows up again. What i explained is exactly what i did. Feel free to ask me more questions.

Ok thanks, i did it and it worked for the most part, when i chose to boot Windows up, that:

rootnoverify(hd0,0)
chainloader+1

didn't show up. now this shows up instead:

Windows has failed to start because
<windowsroot>system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing
replace system file and restart

how am i going to replace this file if i cant get into windows? I do have access to my windows files through Linux, however because my Windows partition is NTFS i can't write any files there, correct?

One outside possibilty is that your boot.ini was corrupted and so that is why you get the error message, because the xp install has been 'moved'. In that case you could use the recovery console to 'fixmbr' which would fix the boot.ini.
It will also delete grub too but that can be easily re-installed from Suse by booting from the suse disc, then 'Manual install', then somewhere there is a 'boot from installed system' or something to that affect. Just point it to the suse partition and it will boot it for you.

EDIT : By 'recovery console' I meant the console accessable via the xp disc. Just boot with xp disc and then, when loaded, press 'R' to use the console.
