Question Does it take alot of programming knowledge to make a liveCD?

I'd just like to know if there is a big need for hardcore programming skills to make a liveCD. I'd really like to put one together for myself. A few things..

a.) I have alot of time
b.) I know some of the liveCDs let you work with them and customize them. I might as well start with that. Any reccomendations for liveCDs that are good in this area?
c.) I'd like to be able to start with just a base liveCD, and add packages as I go. So preferably not a huge cluttered thing..
d.) Make my own bootscripts? That's one thing I'd like to do big time, as the ones I see are always really complicated.
