Question Distro with portable capability? (Looking for advice)

I'm for looking for a "portable" Linux distro that would be able to take be on a x86 machine then next time on a x86_64 without any real problem. I 'm soon going to be upgrading my box to a 64 AMD processor and a new board. I know some distros have no problem being installed to a 20GB external HDD and get switch between two x86 machine but I 'm looking for one that would have no problem really switching between any. I know I will probably have to work with it to get it to work fully on both. I would also like if it had php, mysql, and apache as a opion for packages to install over disc during install. If I left out any thing just free tp to post hate I did so and thank you in advance. So any advice?

I'm not exactly sure how to guide you technically on this but here is a pointer.
Burn a couple of candidate live CD distros and dash down to your local Best Buy and try them out. The worst that will happen is that some won't work. I did this once to verify that a laptop I was thinking of purchasing was "Linux-compatiable".

You'll also probably attract a small gathering and you can show off some Linux to them.

Good luck and Merry Christmas!
