Distro To Make PC a Router

I need a distro of Linux that will make my computer a router. But I need it to have dial-up capabilities since I only have dial-up(right now). Anybody know of a distro?

Smoothwall and IPCop are two possibilities. I used to run an older version of Smoothwall when I was still on dial-up; most likely the current version will still work.

I forgot, I have a distro of Red Hat Enterprise version 3. What programs can I run to make my computer a router. Will it be as fast as SmoothWall?

is this a box you want make a dedicated router/firewall with?? or you just want to run stuff on your desktop for internet connection sharing???

If you want a dedicated box.. I recommend OpenBSD and PF... it'll be the most secure setup you could make.. and PF is a lot easier than iptables...

it'll be a little bit of learning.. but that experience could help you later on... I've read articles about the NSA (among other branches) using OpenBSD routers/firewalls where security is of the utmost concern. It also works very well.

With that said, I also maintain a SmoothWall box for a local company that has been running for about 200 days without reboot (since the last update) and has yet to be intruded upon.

If all you want is a "no hassles" Internet router/firewall then try Freesco (http://www.freesco.org).

It boots off a floppy (no hard drive required), can be set to run totally from RAM once booted, supports up to 10 Ethernet connections and up to 10 modem connections.

I started using it on a 486 with 16MB RAM. Last year I upgraded to a 120MHz Pentium with 64MB... the 486 died :-(

Timothy.
