OK... I am looking for a Distro that I can pop oolite on. I was going to use knoppix, but as for some unknown reason it will not recognise my Intel Pro/1000 (Abit IC7 Max III), re-mastering it has gone out the window.
What I would like is to have a driver packed, minimal distro. The goal is to have a USB stick that I can boot from on any machine, to this end I am looking for something that carries as many sound and video drivers (Inc ATi and nVidia) and ethernet drivers (for updates and addons). I am not worried about an X server (unless oolite requires it, which I don't think it does).
Once I have that I would also like it to have the option of booting into RAM. Knoppix Will do this last task, but the fact that I cannot get any networking on it means I cannot utilise it atm.
Any suggestions? Does anyone write a BareBones LiveCD ready to add things to rather than take them away from?
Haven't seen a minimal live distro with nVidia and ATI drivers that boots from USB.
PCLinuxOS has nVidia or ATI drivers, and making your own custom CD is a snap. I do recall seeing forum comments about putting it on USB flash drive. Making a small ISO would be difficult.
Wolvix can boot from a flash drive. There is a report of success using the ATI driver from Myah in Wolvix (I know nothing about Myah). So there's a chance that one could use the Myah ATI driver in a custom Wolvix mix that would boot from USB.
Puppy can be booted from USB and there is help about how to create your own variant. There are optional OO packages in "Puppy Unleashed", but I don't know if they are what you want.
