Distro For Macs
 

what is a distro that supports a lot of hardware detection for mac computers?

i have an Ibook G3 and i tried gentoo and mandriva on it and both failed to detect barely anything (like the display and the airport)

there should be a distro especially made for mac computers, that would ensure the best hardware detection.

would someone please recomend one to me.

you can also use Suse Linux (powerpc)

If Gentoo failed, I'd try Yellow Dog Linux or Debian. Yellow Dog will probably have the best support for your iBook.

i had heard of yellow dog linux before but i didnt really know the details or that it was a mac-only distro.

earlier today i tried slakintosh (mac version of slakware) but that didnt recognize my display.

next i will try yellow dog linux, i shure hope that works.

if it doesnt i will try debian or suse.

I ran Kubuntu Livecd on my Mini Mac recently and everything seems to have worked except for sound. It was the Hoary version at the time. But I never did install it to the hard drive, yet!

yellow dog worked pretty well. i got a GUI (kde) and i got my apps. i still need to get the airport working though but i dont expect linux distros to autodetect wirless cards (but i do love it when they do)

i tried the kiwifi app to try and get connected. i recognized my hardware i think because it didnt display the usual no network card image i am used to seeing but when i scanned for networks it didnt find mine (and i know the network was up because i was also using another computer that was connected to the network at that time)

this may take some figureing out. sometimes i really hate wirless config... well, all the time.

thanks for telling me about that live cd bittabrotha, i will try that out and see if it is better than what i am using now. maybe it would even be possible to copy some network files from the live cd to my hard drive installation dispite them being different distros and all that...

Hi there, I was reading your post, About your wireless airport card and kwifi not finding your network. How did you get YDL to recognize the wireless network?


It also tells me to check the cable, but under mac osx my card works fine, so the cable isnt a problem?

thanks jacook for replying but this was like a year ago. that system's life is sadly poor.

t_caplette ydl auto-detected it but i had to go to the network settings and set up encryption key. did you do that?

also back a year ago ydl had support for normal airport cards not airport extreme, they may have support for extreme now but i dont know.

most likely it is the 'telling what router to connect to and providing the encryption key' thing though.

hmmmm the good ole bcm43xx problem drivers are in the kernel now , but they cannot distribute firmware so you are going to have to install in yourself i think. Im not sure about the red hat based documentation for it theres alot for ubuntu and obscure stuff for debian. try http://bcm43xx.berlios.de/?go=documentation
