I have a friend that wants a Linux distro to play games on, word process and browse internet with. He needs something that has a large repository of games-doesn't want to worry about Wine. Beginner level. Any ideas as to what distro fits the description?
Debian Etch ... I mean what other distro has a larger repository ? With Synaptic he can easily install new games to try out (there are more games in the contrib and non-free sections so make sure those are in his sources.list along with the standard main). and I'm sure he probably already owns something from the Quake or UT series which run absolutely fabulous in Linux with a small amount of coaxing (see downloading the Linux install scripts and binaries for them)
And an even bigger benefit to him is that he would have built in Tech support because it appears you run Debian Etch as well.. Much easier for you to help him with a Distro you are familiar with than for you to stumble through helping him with a Distro you don't know..
Yep Etch would be my recommendation based on the criteria and resources available.
This is the distro I use and recommend, Why because it works right out of the box. No need to configure Everything, everything just works. It also comes as a 1 CD install that is a live CD that you can install later if you wish.
